This summer, the Sasaki Foundation hosted our sixth annual Summer Exploratory Experience in Design (SEED) program. For six weeks, we hosted 43 high school students representing 10 Boston neighborhoods and six Greater Boston communities. Students spent their summer learning, growing, and creating concepts for Groundwork Somerville’s New Urban farm and the kiosk that will be used by artists at 10 World Trade.

In early 2022, I joined the Sasaki Foundation with hopes of working with community experts towards solutions to challenges in their neighborhoods, learning from practitioners about equity in design and planning, and engaging young people in meaningful employment in the design industry. I am thrilled that this hope became reality as we transitioned back to in-person programming, moved downtown with Sasaki, and built new partnerships over the past year.

Shemar Stewart first joined the Sasaki Foundation’s Summer Exploratory Experience in Design (SEED) program as an intern in 2018, and has served as a teaching assistant every summer since. The SEED program inspired him to switch his major to architecture, and he has used his experience to guide more students through the program. Shemar just graduated from UMass Amherst and is now starting a year-long internship at Sasaki. Estefany Benitez, Sasaki Foundation Program Manager, recently sat down with him to talk about his SEED experiences and career path so far.

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, the Sasaki Foundation hosted our first annual Celebration of Design at 110 Chauncy in Downtown Boston. The event saw 130+ attendees and raised $24,000 to support our mission of equity in design. That’s enough to fund a Design Grants Action Grant, a public speaker panel, and 11 SEED students for a week!

Thank you to our event sponsors Boston Global Investors (BGI), BR+A Consulting Engineers, DLJ Real Estate Partners, Eastern Bank Wealth Management, and Naveo Credit Union.

Our theme, the Eras Tour, highlighted the eras of Hideo Sasaki and the eras of the Sasaki Foundation. A display traced Hideo's experiences from WWII Japanese internment camps through his career as an internationally renowned landscape architect. The Sasaki Foundation's work was also front and center. Since kicking off our own programming in 2018, we have pushed forward our mission of equity in design:

  • 350+ students introduced to careers in design through our design education programs
  • $271,000 awarded to community-led projects through the Design Grants
  • 175+ events hosted to connect communities and design professionals

In addition to learning about Hideo and the Sasaki Foundation, event attendees enjoyed an evening of food, drinks, and fun. Cuisine En Locale and Sugar Baking Company provided delicious local food, with drinks provided by in-kind sponsors Boston Beer Company and Downeast Cider House. Activities abounded, from friendship bracelet making inspired by the Eras Tour to a giant puzzle of the event poster. A community-led open mic was another highlight:

  • Fangli Zhang sang original music.
  • Gabe Colombo shared place-based spoken word and Taylor Swift covers on ukulele.
  • Liz von Goeler impressed with both operatic and jazzy acapella.
  • David Hirzel reflected on his time working with Hideo.

A silent auction included 19 works of art and experiences donated by Sasaki staff and friends of the Sasaki Foundation. Bidding kicked off online, with participants joining from across the country.

(Theme suggestions welcome.) And if you were unable to attend this year, it is not too late to contribute! Donate through the silent auction now through November 30.

Creating Meaningful Internships Workshop

February 29, 2024

How do we amplify all voices in the world of design and better represent the communities we serve? One approach is increasing access to the profession for young people. Meaningful internships can create a safe space to learn and enjoy the industry. Join the Sasaki Foundation to learn from organizations in Greater Boston working towards building a more equitable design industry, starting with high school and college students. Experts from Acentech, the Boston Private Industry Council, the Boston Society for Architecture, and PowerCorps Boston will join a panel discussion moderated by the Hideo Sasaki Foundation. We will then move into small groups to answer your questions about creating meaningful internships at your firm or organization.

What we do

The Sasaki Foundation empowers communities by tackling inequity in design. We work with communities, civic leaders, practitioners, educators, and others to support research and programs that diversify the voices involved in shaping the built environment.

1

Research & Grants

Complex challenges—such as climate change adaptation, affordable housing, mobility and transit access, and community building—require interdisciplinary approaches by a diverse set of stakeholders.

2

Community Learning

Meaningfully engaging the public in the design process offers the greatest opportunity for success in sustaining communities.

3

Design Education

Industries that have a diverse talent pool and an inclusive creative process are the most successful. A thriving design industry needs a pipeline of diverse, talented, and passionate practitioners.

History

In 2000, the Hideo Sasaki Foundation was established by Sasaki, a multidisciplinary design firm, and included a bequest from the family of Hideo Sasaki, an internationally renowned landscape architect who was admired for his teaching, critical abilities, and multidisciplinary approach to design. Today, the Sasaki Foundation carries forward Hideo Sasaki’s legacy by blurring the boundaries that separate practice and research, academia and industry, the profession and the public to co-create change to shape the built environment.
