Whenever we see young students, we always ask them the same question: what do you want to be when you grow up? It’s such a hard question, in your early teens, to ponder what you want to do with the rest of your life. What if, instead, we asked them: what excites you right now? And then help them find an industry that suits those interests.

Now through April 30, the Sasaki Foundation is accepting applications for the Summer Exploratory Experience in Design (SEED) program—a six-week paid internship for two high school students to learn more about career possibilities in the design field by working with Sasaki designers.

This summer, Sasaki had the honor of welcoming Rachel Lee and Shemar Stewart as part of the Sasaki Foundation’s High School Internship program! The Sasaki Foundation strives to increase social equity and access in design on a regional scale. In support of this goal, the Foundation has funded a six-week high school internship program that offers young students the opportunity to explore architecture and design at Sasaki over the summer.

In 2025, the Hideo Sasaki Foundation celebrated 25 years of advancing equity in design. We continue to create local impact through active community-based research, public programming, and design education, serving the communities of Boston and beyond. Thank you for joining us on our mission.

Investing in research, our sixth cohort of Design Grants wrapped up their projects in June 2025. The teams positively impacted the communities of Mission Hill and Roxbury, Dorchester, and Chinatown. And our seventh cohort, which will complete their projects in June 2026, is already doing incredible work. We also continued our partnership with the Cambridge Public Health Department on the Health Promotion Mini Grants. In 2025 the program funded 14 community organizations working towards a healthier Cambridge.

Our 2025 public programming sparked conversation around mobility equity and explored the past, present, and future of collaborative design. We also celebrated the power of women in the design industry. These programs brought more than 1,150 people together from Greater Boston and, thanks to virtual platforms, around the country.

Our design education efforts created space for young people to explore careers in design. Our Summer Exploratory Experience in Design (SEED) hired 45 high school interns and 10 college teaching assistants to advance design projects for local nonprofits. Our Designing Environmental and Social Impact (DESI) after-school program hired 10 high school interns and 3 college teaching assistants to use design to improve their own communities. We are grateful for the meaningful experiences, volunteer design professionals, and support we receive from state and local funders.

Wrapping up this milestone year for the foundation, we press on to set ambitious goals and generate a meaningful agenda of research, programs, and partnerships that grow our impact in communities throughout Greater Boston. In these uncertain times, we still envision a future where the power of community-based planning and design is fully realized for the benefit of the public good. We hope you will join us as we continue this important work.

2026 Celebration of Design

November 5, 2026

Enjoy food, drinks, and fun while supporting our mission of equity in design! Join the Hideo Sasaki Foundation on November 5, 2026, at 110 Chauncy in Downtown Boston for the fourth annual Celebration of Design. We will celebrate Hideo Sasaki’s career, the foundation’s work, and the design community. All proceeds will support our mission of equity in design.

What we do

Our values build on more than six decades of work by Hideo Sasaki, focusing on the following priority areas.

1

Research & Grants

Large-scale, complex challenges require cross-disciplinary thinking. That’s why we convene experts and innovators from all backgrounds. Our research and grants bring issues of inequity in design to the forefront.

2

Community Learning

Informed and engaged residents are central ingredients of a successful community. That’s why we host public programs that amplify a diversity of voices and address socially relevant topics as we work toward systemic change.

3

Design Education

A thriving design industry relies on a pipeline of diverse, talented, and passionate practitioners who infuse new ideas and disrupt established patterns. That’s why we provide youth with opportunities to discover and explore careers in design.

History

The Hideo Sasaki Foundation is named after Hideo Sasaki, a Japanese American landscape architect who came of age in WWII. Hideo was a pioneer of modern design, a leader, and an educator. He articulated—and proved—the value of interdisciplinary design while breaking down the traditional barriers between practice and teaching.

The Hideo Sasaki Foundation was established by Sasaki, a multidisciplinary design firm founded by Hideo, with support from Hideo’s family and friends. Continuing Hideo’s legacy, we sit at the intersection of research, practice, education, and community-driven processes. We advance equity in design, inviting diverse partners to co-create change.
