The Sasaki Foundation announced today the winning teams for its 2023 Sasaki Foundation Design Grants. The Design Grants are an annual competition to showcase projects that support and drive interdisciplinary innovation and empower our local communities.

The Sasaki Foundation announced today the finalists for its fourth annual Sasaki Foundation Design Grants program. These seven teams will pitch to a panel of judges on Wednesday, May 25, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the new Lamplighter CX location. Alexis from Dorchester aimed to raise awareness about the history and effect of segregation by designing a pavilion in Harambee Park that would showcase this history in an engaging way while also serving as a gathering space for the community.
Siena from East Boston imagined an outdoor co-working space to provide healthy environments for people to work outside their home, office, or school building.
Tad from East Somerville designed a native food forest at the new Green Line Extension in Somerville to make the area more appealing and to make fresh fruit accessible for the community.

Ashly from Hyde Park explored how to create climate resilient bus stops; because the 32 is the only bus route that runs through Hyde Park, residents rely on it heavily and wait longer at bus stops in hot and cold weather.
Sophia from West Roxbury designed a creative space that would address the issue of food waste by encouraging people to eat perfectly good leftover food from a pantry.

Each intern researched their neighborhood, visited relevant sites, learned how to apply design concepts, and worked with a teaching assistant and a design professional who mentored them throughout their independent project.

Alexis from Dorchester aimed to raise awareness about the history and effect of segregation by designing a pavilion in Harambee Park that would showcase this history in an engaging way while also serving as a gathering space for the community.
Siena from East Boston imagined an outdoor co-working space to provide healthy environments for people to work outside their home, office, or school building.
Tad from East Somerville designed a native food forest at the new Green Line Extension in Somerville to make the area more appealing and to make fresh fruit accessible for the community.

Ashly from Hyde Park explored how to create climate resilient bus stops; because the 32 is the only bus route that runs through Hyde Park, residents rely on it heavily and wait longer at bus stops in hot and cold weather.
Sophia from West Roxbury designed a creative space that would address the issue of food waste by encouraging people to eat perfectly good leftover food from a pantry.

Join us to hear Sasaki Foundation Design Grants finalists pitch their ideas for projects that address creative community building, new models for housing, innovation in transit and access to mobility choices, innovation in health and wellbeing, and proactive approaches to climate adaptation.

The Sasaki Foundation empowers communities by tackling inequity in design. We work with communities, civic leaders, practitioners, educators, and others to support research and programs that diversify the voices involved in shaping the built environment.

Industries that have a diverse talent pool and an inclusive creative process are the most successful. A thriving design industry needs a pipeline of diverse, talented, and passionate practitioners.
History
In 2000, the Hideo Sasaki Foundation was established by Sasaki, a multidisciplinary design firm, and included a bequest from the family of Hideo Sasaki, an internationally renowned landscape architect who was admired for his teaching, critical abilities, and multidisciplinary approach to design. Today, the Sasaki Foundation carries forward Hideo Sasaki’s legacy by blurring the boundaries that separate practice and research, academia and industry, the profession and the public to co-create change to shape the built environment.
