The Hideo Sasaki Foundation’s 2024-2025 Design Grants Research Report is now available. Our Design Grants advance equity in design, funding community experts to create design solutions for challenges in their neighborhoods. This sixth cohort explored innovative solutions to address environmental justice, inclusive planning processes, and community land use.
The Hideo Sasaki Foundation Board of Trustees would like to share an update with our community as the Hideo Sasaki Foundation looks towards its next chapter. After four years of leadership, Jennifer Lawrence has departed from her role as Executive Director. During a period marked by the challenges and disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jen played an important role in advancing the foundation’s strategic pillars of research, public programming, and design education. Her leadership helped expand educational and employment opportunities for youth and young adults, strengthened partnerships with municipalities and community organizations, and elevated key public programs such as the Celebration of Design and initiatives inspired by the legacy of Hideo Sasaki. She also supported the development of a talented team that will continue to drive the foundation’s mission forward.
The phrase the power of design belongs to all of us is central to the Hideo Sasaki Foundation’s ethos. We believe every individual and community should have the power to shape the built environment around them. Our design education programs are paid internships that exist to educate young people, from diverse backgrounds and identities, about the power they have to shape their world. We amplify their voices and support them on their journey from curious student to design professional.
On Thursday, November 14, 2024, the Sasaki Foundation hosted our second annual Celebration of Design at 110 Chauncy in Downtown Boston. The event saw 100+ attendees and raised $28,000+ to support our mission of equity in design. Thanks to your generosity, we funded a Design Grant, 6 Design Grants finalist honorariums, a public event, 14 DESI youth interns for a semester, and 26 SEED students for a week.
The Hideo Sasaki Foundation announced today the winning teams for our 2025 Design Grants. The Design Grants are an annual competition to showcase projects that promote equity and empower local communities in Greater Boston and the Massachusetts Gateway Cities.
The power of design belongs to all of us. This is the mantra of the Hideo Sasaki Foundation and a sentence I say over and over again at presentations, with funders, and to our grantees and youth interns. We believe this strongly and are honored to walk this walk every day. Thank you for joining us on our mission towards building a more equitable design industry. Together we have accomplished so much, but we still have lots of work to do!

All participants were people of color, emphasizing our commitment to amplify diverse communities and equity in design.
Our 2026 interns participated in 207 hours of high-quality design education programming. They learned the fundamentals of design through professional designers. Experienced educators, activists, and community groups introduced them to various environmental and social impact lessons. All interns reported their DESI experience expanded their knowledge of the design process. Interns also practiced their digital design skills through software workshops on Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and SketchUp. Through thoughtful research, students were able to identify how informed design could benefit their own surroundings.

Garnet Brown Jr. from Dorchester aimed to combat gun violence and prevent youth from joining gangs. He designed a youth center where students could feel a sense of community and creativity.
Xintong Guo from Bay Village designed an age-appropriate modular play structure for adolescents. This space would allow middle and high school students to enjoy physical play and passive use.

Jonatan Vasquez from Everett researched the overcrowding Everett High School is experiencing. His design adapts a building nearby, turning it into gathering spaces for teachers, and additional classrooms designed for STEM education.
Yadiel Velez from Chinatown designed a new concept for the Chinatown section of the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Her design would increase comfort in the area and enhance community interaction.

Interns proudly showcased 17 weeks of growth in their design skills and understanding of their communities. DESI interns work on independent projects based in their own neighborhoods. We pair each intern with a professional designer to guide them through their project. All participants were people of color, emphasizing our commitment to amplify diverse communities and equity in design.
Our 2026 interns participated in 207 hours of high-quality design education programming. They learned the fundamentals of design through professional designers. Experienced educators, activists, and community groups introduced them to various environmental and social impact lessons. All interns reported their DESI experience expanded their knowledge of the design process. Interns also practiced their digital design skills through software workshops on Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and SketchUp. Through thoughtful research, students were able to identify how informed design could benefit their own surroundings.

Garnet Brown Jr. from Dorchester aimed to combat gun violence and prevent youth from joining gangs. He designed a youth center where students could feel a sense of community and creativity.
Xintong Guo from Bay Village designed an age-appropriate modular play structure for adolescents. This space would allow middle and high school students to enjoy physical play and passive use.

Jonatan Vasquez from Everett researched the overcrowding Everett High School is experiencing. His design adapts a building nearby, turning it into gathering spaces for teachers, and additional classrooms designed for STEM education.
Yadiel Velez from Chinatown designed a new concept for the Chinatown section of the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Her design would increase comfort in the area and enhance community interaction.
