In light of and in response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak as well as increased action by both the public and private sectors, we want to share with you the steps the Sasaki Foundation is taking to protect the health of our attendees and employees.
In 2019, through generous donors, thoughtful partners, and engaged research teams, the Hideo Sasaki Foundation was able to deliver on our mission and celebrate impact in the communities we serve.
The public realm is composed of streets, plazas, parks, green spaces, and other outdoor spaces that belong to everyone. It should be accessible to all, provide opportunities to engage in activities, and should be a space where people want to be. People of all backgrounds who have different perspectives and experiences can come together and have a shared experience, which has the potential to further activate these spaces going forward. Earlier this week, the Sasaki Foundation hosted a conversation in the Incubator at Sasaki on activating the public realm. The panel explored how different components of a public space—art installations, programming, the natural environment, and more—can shape positive experiences.
The Sasaki Foundation will be celebrating a big milestone throughout 2020—for 20 years, the Foundation has been providing support to individual scholars, design studios, and research teams working in communities to tackle challenging issues of equity. Throughout this year, the Sasaki Foundation will continue building on our program and research framework to develop new partnerships as we explore innovative solutions to new housing models, climate adaptation, community building, and mobility choices.
From addressing rising sea levels to water adaptation during extreme weather events, climate adaptation and water management are at the forefront of resilience planning for many communities across the world. Two weeks ago, the Sasaki Foundation hosted a conversation on proactive approaches to climate adaptation and water management in the greater Boston community. The panel explored how these approaches play an integral role in the natural, built and social fabric of environmental and community resilience building.
2018 was a momentous year for the Sasaki Foundation. We launched the Incubator at Sasaki in April to the Greater Boston community and welcomed new tenants to the coworking space. In June, the Foundation published a new website, and in September, the Board of Directors established a new direction for the Foundation by completing a strategic plan outlining activities in three major priority areas—community learning and engagement, research and experimentation, and professional practice and growth.

After four years of leadership, Jennifer Lawrence has departed from her role as Executive Director. During a period marked by the challenges and disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jen played an important role in advancing the foundation’s strategic pillars of research, public programming, and design education. Her leadership helped expand educational and employment opportunities for youth and young adults, strengthened partnerships with municipalities and community organizations, and elevated key public programs such as the Celebration of Design and initiatives inspired by the legacy of Hideo Sasaki. She also supported the development of a talented team that will continue to drive the foundation's mission forward.
Jen’s contributions have shaped the foundation’s trajectory, reinforced program collaborations, and positioned the organization for its next phase of transformation. We thank her for her service and wish her the very best in her future endeavors.
At this time, the Board of Trustees is launching a search for the Hideo Sasaki Foundation's next Executive Director. This transition presents an exciting opportunity to continue strengthening the foundation’s programs, partnerships, and impact while advancing our mission to support design education, research, and public engagement.
The Board of Trustees will lead the search process, with support from staff to provide perspective and input at key points. The board anticipates the search will take place over the coming months. The position will remain open through April, and semi-finalist and finalist interviews will take place in late April and May, with the goal of welcoming a new Executive Director by June 2026. Timing may evolve as the process continues.
We encourage you to share this opportunity with leaders who reflect the breadth and diversity of the field.

I had the privilege of working alongside an exceptionally skilled and thoughtful staff whose care, creativity, and commitment bring the foundation’s mission to life every day. Together, we supported Design Grants that challenged assumptions and expanded possibility, public programs that fostered dialogue and connection, and design education efforts that invested in the next generation of thinkers and practitioners. These efforts reflect a shared belief that design is not just about form, but about people.
I learned endlessly from the grantees, partners, and students I worked with, through their curiosity, rigor, generosity, and willingness to imagine new futures. Their work affirmed, again and again, that the foundation’s greatest strength lies in its community and the relationships that sustain it.

I learned endlessly from the grantees, partners, and students I worked with, through their curiosity, rigor, generosity, and willingness to imagine new futures. Their work affirmed, again and again, that the foundation’s greatest strength lies in its community and the relationships that sustain it.
It has been a privilege to serve this ecosystem and to contribute, in some small way, to the ongoing legacy of Hideo Sasaki’s vision.

[post_excerpt] => The Hideo Sasaki Foundation Board of Trustees would like to share an update with our community as the Hideo Sasaki Foundation looks towards its next chapter. After four years of leadership, Jennifer Lawrence has departed from her role as Executive Director. During a period marked by the challenges and disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jen played an important role in advancing the foundation’s strategic pillars of research, public programming, and design education. Her leadership helped expand educational and employment opportunities for youth and young adults, strengthened partnerships with municipalities and community organizations, and elevated key public programs such as the Celebration of Design and initiatives inspired by the legacy of Hideo Sasaki. She also supported the development of a talented team that will continue to drive the foundation's mission forward.
