HEXAHOME is a responsive house prototype that will fulfill the needs of communities affected by natural disasters due to climate change. HEXAHOME consists of a flexible hexagonal unit built with natural and reachable materials that, with the correct maintenance, will remain safe and durable. The prototype is designed around a hexagonal shape given the different degrees of connectivity that the prototype allows, providing dwellers to work and interact in multiple ways.
The Sasaki Foundation announced today the winning teams for its 2019 Sasaki Foundation Design Grants. The Design Grants are an annual competition to showcase projects that support and drive interdisciplinary innovation and empower our local communities. The Sasaki Foundation also selected two additional finalists to receive Community Grants, to participate alongside the research cohort in the Incubator at Sasaki with a shared goal of creating change through the power of design.
The Sasaki Foundation announced today the finalists for its second annual Sasaki Foundation Design Grants program. These seven teams will pitch to a panel of judges on Wednesday, June 5, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Incubator at Sasaki, 64 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA, an event sponsored by Columbia Construction. The Design Grants are an annual competition to showcase projects that support and drive interdisciplinary innovation and empower our local communities.
2018 was a momentous year for the Sasaki Foundation. We launched the Incubator at Sasaki in April to the Greater Boston community and welcomed new tenants to the coworking space. In June, the Foundation published a new website, and in September, the Board of Directors established a new direction for the Foundation by completing a strategic plan outlining activities in three major priority areas—community learning and engagement, research and experimentation, and professional practice and growth.
The Sasaki Foundation announced today its Call for Proposals for the 2019 Design Grants. The Design Grants are an annual program held by the Sasaki Foundation to showcase projects that support and drive interdisciplinary innovation and empower our local communities.
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King asked this question in 1957 and for the remainder of his life. This perspective parallels Hideo Sasaki’s ethos that “contribution is the only value”. This past week, the Sasaki Foundation research teams were able to experience the generosity of what Sasaki employees are doing for others as they all spent a day in the Incubator at Sasaki working with the teams to help create solutions for their projects.

All participants were people of color, emphasizing our commitment to amplify diverse communities and equity in design.
Our 2026 interns participated in 207 hours of high-quality design education programming. They learned the fundamentals of design through professional designers. Experienced educators, activists, and community groups introduced them to various environmental and social impact lessons. All interns reported their DESI experience expanded their knowledge of the design process. Interns also practiced their digital design skills through software workshops on Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and SketchUp. Through thoughtful research, students were able to identify how informed design could benefit their own surroundings.

Garnet Brown Jr. from Dorchester aimed to combat gun violence and prevent youth from joining gangs. He designed a youth center where students could feel a sense of community and creativity.
Xintong Guo from Bay Village designed an age-appropriate modular play structure for adolescents. This space would allow middle and high school students to enjoy physical play and passive use.

Jonatan Vasquez from Everett researched the overcrowding Everett High School is experiencing. His design adapts a building nearby, turning it into gathering spaces for teachers, and additional classrooms designed for STEM education.
Yadiel Velez from Chinatown designed a new concept for the Chinatown section of the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Her design would increase comfort in the area and enhance community interaction.

Interns proudly showcased 17 weeks of growth in their design skills and understanding of their communities. DESI interns work on independent projects based in their own neighborhoods. We pair each intern with a professional designer to guide them through their project. All participants were people of color, emphasizing our commitment to amplify diverse communities and equity in design.
Our 2026 interns participated in 207 hours of high-quality design education programming. They learned the fundamentals of design through professional designers. Experienced educators, activists, and community groups introduced them to various environmental and social impact lessons. All interns reported their DESI experience expanded their knowledge of the design process. Interns also practiced their digital design skills through software workshops on Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and SketchUp. Through thoughtful research, students were able to identify how informed design could benefit their own surroundings.

Garnet Brown Jr. from Dorchester aimed to combat gun violence and prevent youth from joining gangs. He designed a youth center where students could feel a sense of community and creativity.
Xintong Guo from Bay Village designed an age-appropriate modular play structure for adolescents. This space would allow middle and high school students to enjoy physical play and passive use.

Jonatan Vasquez from Everett researched the overcrowding Everett High School is experiencing. His design adapts a building nearby, turning it into gathering spaces for teachers, and additional classrooms designed for STEM education.
Yadiel Velez from Chinatown designed a new concept for the Chinatown section of the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Her design would increase comfort in the area and enhance community interaction.
