In 2018, the Sasaki Foundation began a strategic planning process to explore our path forward. With input from the Board of Trustees, the Advisory Council, the Executive Director, other Sasaki staff, and numerous civic, non-profit, and other individuals, the Foundation has been able to develop a solid understanding of the design landscape, determine key trends in the Foundation’s research areas, and identify needs for organizations working in these areas.
On November 28, the Incubator at Sasaki hosted “Resiliency and Arts & Culture Shaping a City’s Aspirations and Future.” Moderated by Alexandra Lee of the Sasaki Foundation, panelists Mary Anne Ocampo of the Sasaki Foundation, Amy Longsworth of the Boston Green Ribbon Commission, Lori Nelson of the City of Boston, and Lee Heald of AHA! New Bedford discussed how arts and culture can support conversation and work on resiliency.
This summer, Sasaki had the honor of welcoming Rachel Lee and Shemar Stewart as part of the Sasaki Foundation’s High School Internship program! The Sasaki Foundation strives to increase social equity and access in design on a regional scale. In support of this goal, the Foundation has funded a six-week high school internship program that offers young students the opportunity to explore architecture and design at Sasaki over the summer.
Last week, Sasaki and the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) hosted “Design for Equity and Inclusion,” a panel discussion centered on issues of diversity and equity within the design industry. The event took place in the Incubator at Sasaki, a research studio and shared work space for cross-industry collaboration—which celebrated its grand opening in April.
The following discussion with the Sasaki Foundation’s board chair, Mary Anne Ocampo, and executive director, Alexandra Lee, was moderated by Philip Barash. Barash has served as creative director of Sasaki, leading its place branding practice. He is currently on loan to The Boston Foundation as its inaugural Design Culture Fellow.
From 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, the Incubator at Sasaki will host six social entrepreneurs in a conversation-focused event that is free and open to the public. At the event, co-sponsored by MIT Solve and the Sasaki Foundation, five Solve research fellows and a chef-turned-entrepreneur will each give a brief presentation on their work, followed by open dialogue session.

Check out our newly released 2023-2024 Design Grants Research Report to learn more about our fifth cohort's work, offering innovative solutions to address food resilience, access to childcare, environmental justice, community infrastructure, and gentrification, with an ongoing impact in Greater Boston and beyond.
In June 2023, the Sasaki Foundation awarded $52,500 to five community-based research teams, who spent the next ten months advancing and implementing projects that promote equity in design. The team members also met with Sasaki designers who provided design guidance and a deep breadth of knowledge about solutions to the challenges they faced.
The Sasaki Foundation continued to focus on community, housing, transit, health and wellbeing, and climate, under the theme of Shared Voices: Charting a Course for Community Action. This theme recognizes that multiple futures are at stake, and we can make a difference by acting now. The projects are already having a significant impact in their respective communities and will remain as open source research with links to the project websites, to help communities that may be tackling similar issues. Metrics highlighting the impact of these projects are included in the report.
Through our research grants, the Sasaki Foundation seeks to harness the power of design thinking to promote equity and empower local communities, tackling global challenges through local action. Our 2024-2025 Design Grants cohort is hard at work, and we launched the 2025 Design Grants call for proposals in February, with applications due on April 24 at noon. The program will continue to provide teams with access not only to designers at Sasaki—an award-winning international design firm—but also to the Sasaki Foundation's broad network of startups, designers and planners, community groups, artists, civic leaders, and entrepreneurs.
